Demonstration at the Children’s Festival

Sending out a big “Thank You!” to Betty, Nancy and Marlene for volunteering at the Children’s Festival this past Saturday,September 23. The Festival was organized by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council and was held at the Tzeachten Community Hall. Thanks also to  Patti Lawn at the CCAC for inviting us!

Marlene demonstrated her Saori loom and the children were entranced- especially when they were invited to weave for a while.  It never gets old, watching the  wonder of discovery in their faces when they see the product of their handiwork. In keeping with the  theme of recycling, the weft for the  weaving was thrums – bits and pieces of  yarn all tied end-to-end.  Nancy, Betty and I had fun spinning and we  handed out and demonstrated seven strand braid kits to the kids.  Really, it was a day for the children but we had a great time watching them dance to the music and  react to the Princesses and Pirates that visited. Any day is good when you can share children’s laughter and  be reminded that some days it’s good just to have fun. Thanks again Ladies, and here’s looking forward to next years Festival!

Spin-in 2017

I want to say thank you for the many participants at our Spin-in last weekend at Rosedale Traditional School. This event does not just happen over night – many long hours of planning  go into creating a great day.  Our volunteers are the unsung heroes of the day, from planning, set-up and running the event and on to clean up they are the best.

It is also a great time to welcome our wonderful fibre friends for the day. Without your support this event would be for naught. We had some great vendors this year – always a wonderful addition to the  day. We should be posting the information for next years event shortly.

Here are some photos of the great show-and-tell items shared by our friends.

Many Hands

The Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild room boasts many pieces of equipment and a floor filled with looms of all shapes, makes, and sizes. Through the winter, most of our looms are warped with group projects. The snow put a major delay on new warps, but with the weather co-operating, we’ve been able to get back at it.

Three pairs of hands were working together to tie on a warp that will become rosepath tea towels. Long-standing members work with new members to pass on this age-old craft. Centuries of combined experience within the Guild membership means that there is usually at least one person on hand to help with nearly any task.

Saturday Sweater

New Spinner – Bev

New at both spinning and knitting, Bev just had to bring her first completed project in to show off. This lovely Saturday Sweater was handmade from fleece to finish by Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild member, Bev Huseby. Even long-time spinners and knitters had to get a close up look at the texture of this lovely piece.

New Spinner – Jordan

imgp7167Jordan is a relatively new spinner having joined the Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild in January of 2016. She took to spinning faster than a duck to water and was more than willing to accept and excel at any and every challenge the other members could throw at her. With her wheel, Georgia – a Louet S71, she has spun fibre from sheep to dollar store cotton balls and nearly everything in between. Her expertise lies in crochet (for which she won Best of Show at the 2016 Chilliwack Fall Fair), but weaving is very quickly taking a front seat.
